I meet many women who aren’t necessarily unhappy with their wardrobe – they have good stuff in there – but they just aren’t getting the most out of their existing wardrobe.
They have nice items, quality items sitting in their wardrobes, that they are simply not wearing. It’s like they’ve purchased a software system and are only using 20% of its functionality. There’s so much more value, so much more juice, to be gotten from their wardrobes – if they only knew how.
The intention of this post is to share with you three strategies for making the most of your existing wardrobe. Because if you aren’t getting every inch of value from your existing clothes, you are, in effect, ‘losing.’ You are losing the use of the items, and you are losing the enjoyment you could be getting from those items.
1. Consider your life/style.
Have a look at your life as it is right now – what are you spending your time doing? What do you work at? What is your workplace like? Who are you spending time with? And have a look at your style as it is right now – what do you love to wear? What are you drawn to putting on every day or week? What are you not wearing (that perhaps you used to enjoy wearing) right now, and why? With this in mind, add up your life + your style and see what picture is emerging. What does your style need to support in terms of your style? How are you expressing yourself through your clothing choices, and how would you like to express yourself? How is your current wardrobe supporting your life? What gaps exist?
2. Re-imagine and rework your existing wardrobe.
Have a really good look inside your closet. Do you have items that could be re-imagined and reworked? There are so many hidden gems lurking in many women’s wardrobes that we are sorely under-utilizing. We could press them into service if we altered them. These may be items you have previously loved to wear but for some reason, aren’t working for your life, your body, your personality, or your style anymore. You could easily alter many items to extend their life – if you use a bit of imagination and courage. Don’t let quality items languish in your wardrobe if you can easily repurpose and restyle them to make wonderful additions to your wardrobe!
3. Play with the possibilities.
I meet many women who are a little bit scared of mixing things around too much in their closets. They have this skirt and it always is worn with this or that top, those shoes and this necklace. That’s the “set” – it never varies. Why do women do this? Because they know that particular combination works – it’s foolproof. You never make a mistake when dressing in “sets” and you never have to spend a lot of time or attention coming up with a new combination, or set of combinations.
The major downside to this kind of dressing is boredom. You get absolutely sick of wearing these outfits! After a while, they’re predictable and a bit dull. The antidote? Mix it up! Create completely new ensembles from existing pieces. Combine items in your closet that you have never put together before. You’d be amazed at how many new combinations you can come up with – dozens, perhaps even hundreds (depending on the size of your wardrobe). Get creative, let go of some of the rules you may be carrying around and see how much fun you can have creating unique and novel combinations out of existing items.
Love everything in your wardrobe by getting more out of your existing items. Don’t ‘lose’ it by letting unworn items languish in your wardrobe!
