Creating a Personal Retreat with Feng Shui

feng shui The holiday season can be frantic. If your life has been a blur of television, Twitter, too-little sleep, overwhelming clutter, too much time in the car and so on, it may be time to take a Time Out.

Life is fragile. It goes by so quickly. So, then, how do we live? With mini-sabbaticals and retreats!

In the season of Lesser Yang and Greater Yin Chi when nature herself is slowing down and resting, it’s a perfect time to create a mini-retreat for yourself.

Creating refuge in your home is so very important, giving yourself time and space to enjoy the simple and beautiful moments of being alive.

Before Your Retreat Begins:

  • Clear all the clutter and then deep clean your bedroom and master bath with essential oil products such as Mrs. Meyers. Better yet, delegate it and have the whole house cleaned! Make certain there’s no clutter beneath your bed, so chi can circulate round you and help refresh you.
  • Menu-plan, make a shopping list and stock up on fresh fruits, vegetables, juices, smoothies, supplements, detox teas, little spa treats and so on.
  • Put fresh green colored sheets on your bed and clean gold towels in the bathroom to support your healing.
  • Surround yourself with beautifully scented, fresh flowers.
  • Gather contemplative music, meditation cd’s, and dharma talks as well as sacred texts or poetry you’d like to read.
  • Unplug all computers, phones, televisions and take a break from your cell phone, email, the nightly news and newspapers. Make sure to unplug all electronics in your bedroom. Take a leave from social media, driving the car, watching tv and so on.
  •  Mix up aromatherapy spritzers using filtered water and sweet orange, neroli or bergamot oils. When you spray on yourself or in your environment, it will enhance and lift up your energy.

During Your Retreat:

  • Drink from pitchers of purified water with fresh orange slices and visualize that all negative energy will be eliminated.
  • Create little at-home spa treatments with a reflexology roller; steam inhalations or scented hot cloths with essential oils; herbal foot soaks; body brushing; salt scrubs; facials and so on. Personally, I love this foot soak: 21 drops sweet orange oil; 2 tablespoons baking soda; 2 tsp sea salt; 1 cup fresh-squeezed orange juice; and fresh orange slices.
  • Take part in your very own tea ceremony with a beautiful pot, cup and tea from Japan, India or China. Maybe try one of the flowering buds that open magically before your eyes! Just “Drink your tea slowly and reverently, as if this activity is the axis on which the whole earth revolves. Live the moment. Only this actual moment is life.” {Thich Nhat Hanh}
  • Play singing bowls, gongs, ring tingshaws or bells around your own body and throughout your space.
  • Move your body each day with movement practices such as qi gong, yoga, tai chi or free-form dancing.
  • Eat healthy meals slowly, outside in the fresh air if possible.
  • Pray at sunrise or beneath the night stars out in the dewy grass. Spend time in nature amongst the trees or near the ocean. Just laying on your back on the earth watching the clouds or listening to the birds is great! Absorb the sunlight.
  • Contemplate on everything that’s draining your life force-people, events, situations, things, thoughts and habits. Make a vow to begin to clear them one by one until you feel free!
  • Turn off all the lights at sunset and go by the light of candles or lanterns. Go to sleep early (no later than 11pm, the Hour of the Rat) to give your chi deep restoration.
  • Create a special altar in your bedroom dedicated to your healing, rejuvenation and spiritual life.
  • Be quiet. Meditate. Take naps. Watch the birds or the changing light.
  • Imagine yourself under a huge waterfall of clean water. Allow the water to pour down into your head and suffuse your body, drop by drop, and then streaming, blessing your body and mind. The water replenishes, refreshes, revitalizes, heals, nourishes and balances wherever in you there is exhaustion, pain, tension, anxiety, fear, stress, doubt, sorrow or negative karma. You are left filled with energy, joy and diamond light.
  • Take a purifying bath by candlelight. Float the petals of seven different fragrant flowers such as jasmine, rose (thorns removed), yellow chrysanthemum, plum blossom, cherry blossom, magnolia and so on and steep a few minutes before entering your bath. Immerse your entire body in the water visualizing that any negative chi, tension, stress, lethargy, anxiety, sorrow, anger, and so on, are dissolved in the water (and taken away from you down the drain!).

And now? Open your calendar and schedule yourself for some deep rejuvenation-a week, a day, half-day-for as long as you can! Blessings for Your Rest and Restoration!
